Chapter Six

NICKY FOUND living with Spencer surprisingly comfortable. It was nice to have a room to call his own after months of nomadic living. As he knew already, the bed was a good one. And Spencer made enough of a mess to keep Nicky pleasantly busy.

Nicky didn’t actually see much of his new roommate, at least not for the first few weeks. They ran into each other now and then in the big house, and they’d stop to chat for a few minutes, but Spencer spent most of his time holed up in his office with the door closed or driving to and from meetings with clients. Neither of them cooked often. Spencer seemed to live mostly on takeout, while Nicky ate a lot of sandwiches and salads. Their mealtimes rarely coincided.

With a little extra money in his bank account, Nicky decided to take a couple of online community college classes. They filled the time and made him feel more productive; and on the off chance he ever decided to complete his degree, they’d get him that much closer. He ended up with a chemistry class, which was kind of fun. He did virtual experiments with the software the professor provided. He also took a math class, but that was a larger struggle. He’d never been all that great at the subject anyway, and it had been a long time since he’d calculated anything more complicated than a 17 percent tip.

One evening in mid-September, Nicky sat on the nice leather couch in the family room, algebra book splayed on his lap. But unless the knowledge somehow burned its way through the pages and the binding and his jeans, then sank into his nervous system and was carried to his brain, he probably wasn’t going to learn to factor polynomials that night. His attention was on the huge TV screen, where Jon Stewart was interviewing a guy who had written a book about the evils of snack food.

“Doritos are the devil’s work,” Spencer intoned behind him, making Nicky jump a little. Nicky hadn’t heard him enter the room.

Nicky swiveled his neck to grin at Spencer. “With Doritos it’s not the health risks you gotta worry about. It’s that cheesy powder stuff they’re coated in. Stains like anything. A couple months ago I house-sat for a family with preteen boys and a white sofa. It wasn’t pretty. God, and you don’t even want to think about the potential impact of Cheetos.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. I’m more of a beef jerky kind of guy anyway.” Spencer walked around the couch and plopped down on the opposite end. “Mind if I join you?”

“It’s your house.”

“Well… don’t want to disturb you.”

“’Cause yeah, you’re obviously interfering with my intense study session.” Nicky waved a hand at the nearly blank sheet of notebook paper beside him.

“Math?”

“Torture.” He scrunched up his face as if someone were sliding slivers of bamboo under his fingernails.
